The theme for the carnival ‘Cantonese Opera Day 2024’ is ‘Fun with Cantonese Opera, Joy at Ko Shan Theatre’, and it is designed as a family-friendly event suitable for all ages.

Highlights of the programme include:

‘Up and Coming New Forces in Cantonese Opera’ and the ‘Child Cantonese Opera Stars Showcase’ – a number of promising young and child Cantonese Opera artists will perform various Cantonese Opera excerpts.

Cantonese Operatic Songs Unplugged - Winners of the Hong Kong Inter-school Music Festival Competition, as well as Cantonese Opera students will perform Cantonese Operatic songs and share their learning experience and joys.

Laugh and Craft: Cantonese Opera Playgroups – including interactive games for families such as ‘Cantonese Opera Quiz Competition’, ‘Miniature Cantonese Opera Masks Workshop’ and ‘Cantonese Opera Handicraft Workshop’. Families may learn more about the Cantonese Opera in a fun way.

Cantonese Opera Trial Performance Playground - Cantonese Opera tutors will teach parents and children to try performing a short piece of Cantonese Opera together, so that they can experience the fun of acting and singing, and also enjoy a brand-new experience of parent-child fun.

Autograph Session and Cantonese Operatic Songs Sing-Along: Patrons can have a close encounter with famous Cantonese Opera virtuosi at the ‘Autograph Session’ and join the ‘Sing-Along’ session to sing classic Cantonese Operatic songs with the renowned artists.

A series of talks and workshops will also be held on the day, including ‘ Workshop on Stylised Movements & Postures of Cantonese Opera’, ‘Cantonese Opera Make-up & Dress-up Demonstrations’, ‘Talk on Cantonese Opera Culture’, ‘Behind-the-scenes Cantonese Opera Talk’, Cantonese Opera Education and Information Centre Guided Tour, and Cantonese Opera Art Exhibition organized by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, which are sure to provide participants with a deeper understanding of Hong Kong’s local culture and an unforgettable in-depth tour of the Cantonese Opera scene.
